If you are looking for a mid century home on Brisbane’s north side, you would be hard pressed to find much at all.
It would seem that the south side and Brisbane’s western suburbs have the most amazing examples of mid century architecture, but north of the City it’s slim pickings!
There are a few around Wavell Heights, The Gap and West Chermside, but one of the most notable areas, in my opinion, would be Aspley.
Mid Century Aspley
Last year, I spotted a great home in Aspley, a little out of my usual real estate stalking boundaries, but I was so impressed, I called the agent to find out about open inspections.
In the time that it took them to return my calls, the house had been snapped up by a savvy couple and by a strange coincidence that usually occurs around these parts (the north side is a small place), it turns out I knew the new owners quite well!!
All I can say is, good taste must be genetic!
The home was in need of some serious TLC and is now undergoing a renovation and repair. If you’re interested in seeing more, pop over to the blog Mid Century Aspley to watch their progress.
Another way of keeping up with Modernist happenings is the Modernist Australia website.
Last year, they featured a property from Aspley that was listed for sale. Sitting on a block of nearly 3000 square meters, the home had won ‘House of the Year’ in 1963. It was an amazing home and as far as I can tell, it is still in one piece, despite some of the land in front of it being sub-divided.
Take a look at this gallery of photos to see what a gem this old home is.
